It’s only fitting that I closed my trip with the Great Ocean Road before I headed home to Cincinnati. Before leaving Sydney, my professor recommended driving the Great Ocean Road as one of the best things to do in Melbourne. In total, this was a 13 hour excursion for 105 Australian dollars – insane! We drove 2 hours and 40 minutes outside of Melbourne and I was thrilled to be able to cover more of Australia!
While the seats were a little cramped and the bus was full, this was by far the better option over renting a car. It would have cost me $215 a day to rent the car before paying for gas. Add in the facts that the Australian roads are tiny and Aussies drive on the left side of the road, it wasn’t a good idea.
The views were incredible! I would guess it is similar to California’s Pacific Coast Highway or Road to Hana in Hawaii. We stopped at small towns along the way for morning tea and lunch which was all included in the price.
The lunch restaurant, Iluka, was so accommodating with my allergies when I ordered chicken schnitzel and salad. They were unsure of where the chips (Australian French fries) were produced so they even substituted roasted vegetables for me! Apparently, Dooley’s, one of the best ice cream shops in Australia was delicious, but they had allergen warnings posted all around their shop. I was bummed, even though that result is typical in most sweet treat shops. They even had vegemite flavored ice cream, which I totally would have tried!
We continued our journey to the 12 Apostles by stopping at multiple lookout points. The views were gorgeous and the waves were huge! I’m so glad to say I’ve done it!
After spending the day in the bus, you can bet we were tired! It’s so sad that our last day down under has come and gone. However, it was great being home with friends and family for the holidays!
Cheers to continuing to live my best life and happy 2018!
